This role provides strategic advice and an operational response by developing and delivering a work programme that provides leadership for, and technical advice on, city and community safety, harm reduction and improved wellbeing, with a focus on the central CBD area. About you

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about helping make Wellington a safer place for everyone to enjoy so experience and/or understanding of crime prevention or community safety and the role local government can play in this is key. Possibly the most important skill you can have in this role is awesome communication - you'll be comfortable communicating with a wide variety of different people and stakeholders, everyone from the general public, business owners and retailers, external partners like the Police and BIDs and internal teams like Libraries and Parks, Sports and Recreation. You'll also be facilitating a monthly hui which includes both internal and external stakeholders, so if you have facilitation skills, this would be a bonus, but either way you need to be a confident and savvy communicator who has the ability to bring people together. You'll also need strong written communication skills, to enable you to undertake and prepare Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) reports on issues relating to trends in crime, anti-social behaviour and the perceptions of safety, providing options for early interventions to emerging issues. If you aren't familiar with CPTED reports, you will receive training, but you will ideally have some report writing experience.

You'll be focused on taking a collaborative approach to solutions and be able to problem solve effectively. You'll be curious and motivated to talk to people to understand the problems around city safety in the CBD and use your initiative to deep dive into these with stakeholders and look for possible solutions, whilst understanding that these are complicated issues that take time to resolve. To help make informed decisions, you'll be familiar with interpreting data provided by the wider team and working closely with internal stakeholders like our CCTV team.
