Starting salary negotiable + superannuation
Design Analyst: $ 82,988 to $ 96,907
Senor Design Analyst: $ 95,972 to $ 112,181

The roles | Te tūnga
We have 5 Senior Design Analyst and 9 Design Analyst roles available across our statistical delivery branches - Data Operations and Infrastructure, and Macroeconomic, Population and Housing, and Social and Environment. All roles are permanent unless stated otherwise.
Reporting to the Unit Manager of one of the teams below, as a Senior Design Analyst or Design Analyst, you'll be responsible for researching, designing, and implementing a range of innovative statistical, data and analytical solutions to support and inform all stages of the data and statistics lifecycle across Stats NZ. The roles provide support in the form of expert guidance and advice to a wide range of teams and individuals across Stats NZ and the wider data ecosystem. In addition, the senior roles within each design area will have a key role in supporting, mentoring, and enabling other analysts within the team with their work and with their ongoing development.
Integrated Data Production | Whakanao Raraunga Paihere
This team plays a pivotal role in providing technical support for the Code Modules Initiative - an all-of-data system effort to make New Zealand's integrated data assets easier to use, and deliver faster speed to value. The initiative is now expanding to support the growing demands on administrative data from delivery of the Social Investment approach and shifts to greater use of administrative data in the production of official statistics.
This role would be responsible for the data tools used by the initiative, and support seamless integration of module development and stewardship into the production of the Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI) and Longitudinal Business Database (LBD).
Role available: 1x Design Analyst.
Based in Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch.
Institutional Sectors |Ngā Rāngai ā-Hinonga:
This team produces the quarterly Income and Savings release, annual Institutional Sector Accounts, and Balance Sheets. As well as Central and Local government.
Roles available: 1x Senior Design Analyst (fixed term 12-month parental leave cover role), 1x Design Analyst.
Based in Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch.
Economic Growth |Te Tupunga Ōhanga:
The focus of this team is to produce quarterly GDP statistics and annual productivity statistics.
Role available: 1x Design Analyst
Based in Wellington.
Prices and Deflators | Ngā Utu me ngā Take Whakaheke Tukipū:
This team is responsible for producing the quarterly Consumers Price Index, Household Living-Cost Price Indexes, Business Price Indexes, Labour Cost Index, and monthly Selected Price Index.
Roles available: 2x Design Analysts (fixed term between 12 - 18 months).
Based in Wellington.
Census Design and Delivery |Te Hoahoa & Te Horanga Tatauranga:
This team is responsible for leading the design for census, as well as being central to Stats NZ's integrated delivery approach. This team includes product ownership and development for the census survey and design expertise, including that with key communities (e.g. disability communities, rainbow communities, Pacific communities etc.)
Roles available: 2x Senior Design Analysts, 2x Design Analysts
Based in Wellington or Christchurch.
Population Projections, Estimates, and Coverage |Ngā Matapae, ngā Whakaarotanga Whakamua me ngā Kapinga Taupori:
This team is responsible for the preparation of the suite of population estimates and projections, as well as family and household statistics and vital statistics. The team is also responsible for updating the Estimated Resident Population and the delivery and completion of the 2023 Census Coverage Project and work programme in the 2024/25 financial year.
Roles available: 2x Design Analysts (including 1x 12-month parental leave cover role)
Based in Christchurch.
Travel Migration and Housing Statistics | Ngā Tauanga Haerenga, Hekeheke, Whāinga Whare Hoki:
The team is responsible for the preparation of international travel and migration statistics, as well as the continuous improvement of the migration data model. The team is also responsible for the preparation of dwelling and housing quality statistics.

Based in Christchurch.
Labour Market Statistics | Ngā Tauanga Mākete Mahi:
The focus of this team is producing data and statistics that contribute to our understanding of supply and demand factors of the labour market in Aotearoa New Zealand. The labour and employment markets are dynamic and have many dimensions that we need to produce data and statistics about.
Role available: 1x Senior Design Analyst
Based in Wellington or Christchurch.
These roles would suit someone who can bring:
Experience and interest in macroeconomic, population and housing, or social and environment data.
A bachelor's degree in a relevant field (computer science, statistics, etc.) that has a significant data component or equivalent experience.
Examples of technical leadership, e.g. in decision making, problem solving, or leading a technical project or piece of work.
A passion for innovation and application of conceptual and creative thinking skills to trouble-shoot and to develop or improve statistical designs, systems and processes.
Experience and strong capability performing data analysis using statistical applications (such as R, Python or SAS or equivalent).
Great team-working skills, personal resilience and the confidence to create strong working relationships.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills that can explain complex concepts in plain English.
Demonstrated customer centricity.
Any information about your knowledge and experience, or desire to learn and build knowledge and experience of Te Tiriti, Tikanga, Te Reo and Te Ao Māori, and engagement with Māori.
Have demonstrated, encouraged or supported diversity and inclusion in or outside of work.
For senior roles, leading and develop technical capability, coaching and supporting others.
For senior roles, experience with relevant quantitative and qualitative research on a range of diverse and complex research questions.
