Ko mātou | About Us

Tatauranga Aotearoa - Stats NZ is a Central Government employer of 1600+ people across Aotearoa. We provide data and statistics to support the decisions of Government, Māori and Iwi organisations, businesses, NGOs, and New Zealanders.

The Business Enablement & Development branch focuses on providing high quality and centralised support across the Insights and Statistics Group. It is designed to broaden our capabilities and skills - in effect, give us more bandwidth and streamline our operating practices. It also supports the Deputy Government Statistician/Deputy Chief Executive (DGS/DCE) and helps them ensure that the overall group is operating at its peak.

It will also be the home team for significant project and development work (outside of that performed within subject matter areas), including transformation and census activity.

Te tūnga | The role

As a General Manager, you will lead, develop, and drive your branch to deliver our business plan, and contribute to advancing our strategy for Stats NZ Tatauranga Aotearoa and the wider Government Data Strategy and Roadmap (subject to further updates).

You report to the DGS/DCE for the Insights and Statistics group, who is based in Wellington.

Your role is part of Stats NZ's third tier leadership group, delivering what is needed for our customers and stakeholders today, and visualising and realising what is needed in the future.  Your leadership is important to the effective functioning of New Zealand's data system. Your focus is on medium-term objectives and translating our strategic goals into specific, actionable plans aligned with or contributing directly to transforming the organisation.

You will support your fellow third tier members and assist the DGS/DCE of Insights and Statistics to shape the strategic direction of the organisation (with the Executive Leadership team) and to ensure the Group delivers quality results.

As your role is a key organisational leadership role, you may be rotated (with your agreement) to other leadership roles within Stats NZ to enhance organisational and individual growth. Elements of your role may change with the future needs of the Branch and Stats NZ.

This role would suit someone who can demonstrate:

  • Why Tatauranga Aotearoa - Stats NZ is the place for you, why us, and why Government?

  • Any information about your knowledge and experience, or desire to learn and build knowledge and experience of Te Tiriti, Tikanga, Te Reo and Te Ao Māori, and engagement with Māori.

  • How you've demonstrated or encouraged diversity and inclusion in and/or outside of work.

  • Examples where you've shown curiosity and tried new things, taken on other perspectives, challenged the norm, reflected on your own and other's behaviours, attitudes or motivations to learn.

  • A relevant tertiary qualification / significant experience in senior leadership roles and experience in leading complex business programmes

  • Proven relationship, interpersonal, coaching and listening skills with the ability to communicate and influence at all levels of the organisation and government sector.

  • Understand and effectively navigate the policy context, with a deep and broad knowledge of the machinery of government

  • The ability to influence at a senior level through networks, relationships, and using the levers available to achieve system outcomes

  • Awareness of the Crown's relationship with tangata whenua through Te Tiriti o Waitangi and ability to demonstrate leadership in Te Tiriti partnership

  • Strategic thinking and conceptual skills to work with the Chief Executive and the Executive Leadership Team to connect ideas and devise strategies that shape organisational direction

  • Courage and decisiveness, to prioritise, to succeed - or to fail fast and move forward.

  • Thrives in a dynamic, ambiguous and agile environment - able to work on various projects simultaneously.
