On 1 July 2024, Maritime NZ's existing Health & Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA) designation was extended to include work at New Zealand's 13 major ports.

The HSWA Regulatory Operations team has been established to enable Maritime NZ to achieve excellence in delivering its functions as a designated HSWA regulator. The team will play a critical role leading Maritime NZ's strategy for regulating ports and harbours, engaging with port and industry stakeholders, and driving a significant uplift in the health and safety performance of the maritime and port sectors.

Te tūnga | The role

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Executive Regulatory Operations and a member of the Regulatory Operations Senior Leadership Team, the role is responsible for leading a national team of HSWA specialists.  Based in Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, Christchurch, Napier or Nelson, key accountabilities include:

  • Leading the development and delivery of Maritime NZ's Ports and Harbours strategy

  • Planning and leading a HSWA regulatory programme aligned to harm prevention programmes and delivered across Maritime NZ teams

  • Leading the new HSWA Regulatory Operations team to ensure exceptional regulatory delivery, setting team expectations and building on our positive, inclusive and collaborative working culture

  • Building HSWA capability across Maritime NZ's frontline teams to ensure they can effectively undertake HSWA-related activities

  • Leading engagement with industry and other key stakeholders to influence improved health and safety outcomes

We are seeking candidates with excellent people leadership skills, strategic capability and a track record of building highly engaged and successful teams. The role requires broad HSWA and regulatory knowledge and experience, preferably within high-risk industrial environments with a strong harm prevention focus, and advanced understanding of best practice health and safety and risk management.

You will be an excellent relationship builder and networker who can influence and build credibility, and create positive impact across a range of stakeholders. You will also have proven ability to think at a system-wide level and translate ideas into future-focused actions. Candidates must be willing and able to work in a culturally safe and respectful manner, being mindful of the cultural diversity of the industry and having regard to Te Ao Māori and Treaty of Waitangi principles.

Salary range $161,542 - $197,440 depending on skills and experience + superannuation.
