Senior Advisor - Financial Monitoring and Governance - Wellington

Job Description

We are looking for an all-star Senior Advisor to join the Monitoring and Crown Ownership Team (MCO). You will work with a tight knit team that specialises in financial and risk management and governance and is responsible for the TEC's monitoring of the tertiary education system.

 

The MCO team is sector-facing, delivery focused and operates in a fast-paced environment. The team is at the coal face of TEC's monitoring function and has a broad coverage of the current issues and challenges facing the tertiary sector. In this role, you will help deliver TEC's financial monitoring and risk management functions, as well as provide support to the external governance work programme.

 

The Senior Advisor will be a high performing “all-rounder” responsible for providing evidence-based analysis (financial and non-financial) to senior stakeholders and assisting the Principal Advisor - Governance to support the Minister and tertiary institutions to appoint council members, and develop, publish and promote good governance practice.

 

He angitūtanga: About the Role

  • Lead financial analysis and monitoring of TEOs using established processes and tools; identify and mitigate risks for long-term sustainability.

  • Work closely with the Principal Advisor - Governance to manage the Minister for Tertiary Education and Skills' appointments process for tertiary institution councils and support a programme which provides inductions and promotes good governance.

  • Provide critical thinking around how the TEC can continually improve and strengthen its monitoring activities, considering emerging issues.

  • Contribute to MCO's risk management function and reporting to the TEC Board

  • Contribute to continual improvements to the financial monitoring frameworks, external governance work programme, and processes and methods of reporting to stakeholders.

  • A strong business acumen, ability to work with complex financial information and experience in undertaking financial viability analysis.

  • Exceptional relationship management skills, and the ability to relate to stakeholders at all levels, including Chancellors/Chairs, and other council members; staff in tertiary education institutions and other government agencies; and the TEC's executive leadership team.

  • A proven understanding of the machinery of government, including Cabinet and Cabinet committee processes, and good political ‘nous'.

  • Ability to analyse complex problems and explore broadly for solutions.

  • An ability to write clearly and articulate complex issues via concise advice.
