The Community Engagement Manager plays a pivotal role in strengthening Hato Hone St John's presence and impact across Manawatū-Whanganui, Taranaki, Wellington and Wairarapa, East Coast, and the Lakes districts.
Reporting to the Regional Manager – Community Engagement and guided by the General Manager – Community Engagement, you will lead a team of Community Engagement specialists, collaborate with Area Committees, and work across the wider Community Health teams and Hato Hone St John network to deliver impactful, sustainable, and health-focused community development initiatives.
As a volunteer-centric organisation, we value and support our Tūao (volunteers). You will play a crucial role in promoting and integrating our Volunteer Sustainability Strategy, Mahi Aroha, and supporting best practices in volunteer recruitment and management.
This role requires regular travel, so a full, clean driver’s licence is essential.
Key responsibilities:
Provide leadership, direction, and support to the Community Engagement team, including Community Engagement Coordinators (CECs) and Community Engagement Administrators (CEAs), ensuring alignment with strategic goals and effective community impact.
Act as the primary liaison between Hato Hone St John and Area Committees, helping to identify community needs and promote existing programmes.
Lead the development of new initiatives and partnerships that strengthen local community health and well-being.
Support and empower Area Committees to achieve key milestones and ensure their alignment with organisational strategy.
Evaluate Area Committee performance and provide guidance to enhance impact.
Build and maintain positive, proactive relationships with key stakeholders, including volunteers, community leaders, and partner organisations.
Contribute to the development and execution of Hato Hone St John’s Community Health & Engagement (CH&E) strategies, including annual impact plans, budgeting, and forecasting.

To succeed in this role, you will bring:
Proven leadership skills, with the ability to motivate, inspire, and influence others.
Experience in community development and engagement, ideally across a geographically diverse region.
An understanding and appreciation of the vital role volunteers play in strengthening communities.
Excellent communication and relationship management skills, with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders.
Financial acumen, with experience in budgeting and forecasting.
An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, tikanga Māori and Te Reo is desirable, we will support ongoing learning and development in this area.
