Kai Pūtaiao Māori - Senior Scientist | Christchurch/Wellington

We are seeking an individual who is passionate about delivering Māori-led science and research. We seek an experienced senior scientist to support and oversee a range of taiao focused programmes that involve collaboration between ESR and Māori communities. 

 

Providing innovative science delivery and break through solutions for iwi aspirations, this opportunity significantly contributes to ESR’s impact for Māori.

 

Ko wai mātou | About us 

ESR is currently undertaking an ambitious programme of transformation as we reset the organisation for greater sustainability, investment, and impact in Māori-led research and Mātauranga-based solutions.

 

We support iwi, hapū and Māori community partners through three programmes of work. He Wai Māpuna is a unique enterprise-wide approach providing water-based science delivery to iwi and investment to grow distinct iwi knowledge. Te Hāpai Ō is a program focused on researching mahinga kai food safety, while He O Uta He Ō Tai is dedicated to nurturing the future generation of Māori scientists.

 

Te tūnga | The role

We have a fulltime fixed term parental cover opportunity until October 2025 for a Kai Pūtaiao - Senior Scientist. 

 

We are looking for a Senior Scientist who is experienced in working within a kaupapa Māori framework and conducting scientific research that aligns with project milestones within our Māori Impact work programmes focused on making a kai (food safety) and wai health.

 

The role will require you to support our team work on a range of kaupapa ranging from field work, lab work, scientific analyses, and kaupapa Māori wānanga. This position involves extensive collaboration within our Māori Impact team as well as with other relevant science groups at ESR. You must be able to effectively engage with experts and scientists from various disciplines within our organisation.

Ki angitu koe | About you 

  • To be successful in this role, you will ideally have the following attributes: 

  • A postgraduate tertiary degree, Master’s or higher, in a relevant scientific field.

  • At least 5 years’ experience working in an applied science and research role with a minimum of 2 years’ experience delivering science to and working with iwi, hapū or Māori organisations. 

  • Demonstrable experience in technical skills, methodologies, and tools to effectively develop experiments that provide meaningful and relevant outcomes for Māori stakeholders.

  • Practical and hands-on experience in a laboratory, ideally in methodologies related to molecular biology, microscopy, or chemistry and be comfortable mentoring staff and students with a range of experience.
