Pūkenga Reo | Lecturer in Te Reo Māori (Wellington)

Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Pūkenga Reo - Lecturer in Te Reo to join our kāhui at Te Kawa a Māui - the School of Māori Studies, which sits within the University’s Iho and is led by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Māori.

This is a permanent and full-time position, commencing in June 2025.

Kaupapa Matua - Key responsibilities:

  • Teach undergraduate courses in our Māori Studies and Kaitiakitanga majors.

  • Ideally, contribute to courses in our postgraduate programme, which includes a Masters in Indigenous Studies.

  • Supervise post-graduate students to completion.

  • Develop and maintain kaupapa rangahau that build mātauranga and contribute positively to te ao Māori.

  • Publish, disseminate and communicate your mahi to various audiences. 

  • Contribute to hautūtanga/leadership responsibilities, administrative roles, strategic endeavours, and outreach to hapori.

Ō pūmanawa - About you

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be motivated, student-focused and collegial.

  • Be comfortable in tikanga and kaupapa Māori settings, including the marae, and you are passionate about te reo Māori. 

  • Be able and willing to teach in core papers of our undergraduate majors. 

  • Be comfortable and keen to supervise postgraduate students. 

  • Have research that will contribute to te ao Māori and complement the mahi of the school. 

  • Ideally, you will have a PhD or be working towards one. 

  • Think strategically, work collaboratively, take initiative and work independently, 

  • Have values and be mission-driven. 

  • Will thrive upon the various tasks and opportunities that academia has to offer.
