Āporei Māori | Principal Advisor - Wellington

We’re looking for an Aporei Maori, Principal Advisor Maori to play a pivotal role in policy analysis, strategy development, and research for the leadership team You’ll provide expert guidance on how Greater Wellington upholds Te Tiriti o Waitangi and fosters Maori participation in decision-making processes. This full-time,18-month fixed term position is based in our central Wellington office in Cuba Street.

Reporting directly to Te Pou Whakarae, Te Hunga Whiriwhiri and working closely with the Principal Advisor Te Tiriti, your responsibilities include leading organisational strategy development, advising on past, present and upcoming relevant legislation, maintaining information resources, and providing expert Tiriti based advice on Maori and environmental policy matters. You will also help cultivate relationships with mana whenua and Maori community leaders, influencing governance arrangements and advancing shared priorities.

Skills and experience required:

You’ll have a deep understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tikanga Maori, particularly kaitiakitanga and the management of natural resources, the Resource Management Act and the Local Government Act. Sound knowledge of local government processes, strategic acumen and political savvy are essential in navigating the sometimes ambiguous and politically complex environment.

With at least 10 years of senior level leadership experience, you’ll demonstrate expertise in providing advice, developing strategy, influencing stakeholders, and engaging leaders from governance tables to marae. Your track record should reflect successful application of business and management principles, including strategic planning, resource allocation, change management, and coordination of people, projects, and resources.

Effective teamwork, coaching and mentoring abilities are required as are strong networking, influencing, and relationship-building skills to bring together diverse groups with multiple stakeholders together working towards a common purpose.
