Mō te tīma | About the team
The Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai is committed to being an honourable Treaty Partner. The Pou Tairangahau, Hauraki/ Waikato/Taranaki (HWT), will provide direct support to the Regional Director and wider leadership team, to enable our kaimahi to build authentic and meaningful relationships that support the aspirations of hapū and iwi Māori and reflect the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in our mahi, and deliver on our treaty settlement commitments within the HWT region.
He angitūtanga | About the Role
This is an influential and strategic role which supports our Kaihautū Matarautaki Operations Director for the region, to lead our region's approach and engagement with iwi and hapū.
This role will call on your mātauranga and experience of tikanga Māori and te ao māori, commitment and passion for te taiao, and ability to work strategically and collaboratively to influence a better future for this region.
To deliver on the organisation goal of being an honourable Treaty partner in the Hauraki, Waikato, Taranaki region we have a capability framework. Through implementation of the capability framework the Pou Tairangahau will have wide influence which enables our kaimahi to build authentic and meaningful relationships that support the aspirations of Māori and reflect the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in our mahi.
This role will:
support Kaihautū Matarautaki on relationships with hapū and iwi, including current and forth-coming treaty settlements in the region
provide strategic Māori advice and direction to Kaihautū Matarautaki and members of regional leadership team
lead our approach to building cultural capability of the region's staff and provide support, coaching and mentoring to the Kaihautū Matarautaki and senior staff
provide regional leadership on the implementation of treaty settlements at place, in support of accountable managers
contribute to national priorities, systems, policies, and strategies lead by DOC's national Treaty Relationships Group.
This is one of two Pou Tairangahau in the region providing an opportunity to collaborate on strengths, approaches, networks, and knowledge bases. This role is a full time, permanent position based at our regional office in central Hamilton will focus on delivery and relationships in the northern part of the region.
He kōrero mōu | What we are looking for
You will be kaupapa driven, fluent (or progressing towards fluency) in Te Reo Māori and have a strong knowledge of tikanga and kawa.
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako kia angitū ai koe | Skills and experience required for success
Proven relationship management experience is needed to assist you to comfortably engage and work in partnership with iwi and tangata whenua.
Be confident in and respect for Te Ao Māori.
Demonstrated advisory and senior-level experience.
Strong written & oral communication skills.
Strong understanding and knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, its principles and implications on society and conservation.
Have knowledge and experience working in Government Departments or Local Authorities.
Possessing existing relationships or an understanding of the iwi landscape across the Hauraki, Waikato and Taranaki region is an advantage.

The salary range for this position is $98,056 to $139,153 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
