The Pou āwhā position is embedded within Mataaho Aronui, the Council's Māori strategic outcomes team. The position offers you the opportunity to join us to realise our Tūpiki Ora vision to see everyone in our city thrive, and to ensure the best possible future for our mokopuna.
Over the last couple of years Council along with our Tākai Here partners and our hapori Māori (Māori communities) have collectively developed and implemented the Tūpiki Ora Strategy and together we are committed to nurturing the wellbeing of our community.
Tukutuku Māori team
Tukutuku Māori is one of three teams within Mataaho Aronui, the Pou āwhā role sits within this team. Tukutuku Māori provides leadership, advocacy, and strategic advice through intentional engagement and partnering both within Council and externally to drive and implement Tūpiki Ora and Tākai Here. The team is responsible for maintaining and fostering existing partnerships while identifying opportunities for new partnerships to collectively achieve positive outcomes for Māori across Poneke.
Mō te tūranga / The role
The Pou āwhā is responsible for building and maintaining strong trusted relationships with Tākai Here partners, Māori and other key stakeholders. The role sets the standard of excellence for other team members in relation to manaaki-led relationship management, building strong connections and high level of trust and credibility with iwi Chairs, CEOs, and senior leaders and many more. They provide strategic advice from an ao Māori perspective to Council operations and services and enables all of Council to provide better outcomes for Māori. The work is varied and involves advising on projects and initiatives from reo Māori revitalisation to taiao protection, from building Māori capability to strategy, policy and city planning.
Mōu ake / You:
We are looking for someone who is passionate about seeing iwi Māori aspirations come to life.
You'll enjoy collaborating and spending time in wānanga to figure out how to make the most of the opportunities for the biggest possible impact. It is essential you are comfortable navigating Māori spaces and can naturally weave tikanga and ao Māori concepts and values throughout your mahi.
This role is for someone who can bring blue-sky thinking and vision but is also practical and knows what can be realistically implemented - we can't do it all! You won't need to deliver it yourself, but you'll need to know how to communicate well to other teams who are responsible for the delivery and oversee delivery to ensure maximum impact for Māori.
You'll be able to look holistically at the systems we operate in and work in a cross-agency and coordinated way to achieve outcomes. You'll have experience using evidence along with your expertise to make informed decisions and feedback any trends to other areas of the organisation.
