Starting salary: $132,114- $178,742 + superannuation

The role | Te tūnga  

This role is permanent, based in Wellington. Reporting to the General Manager Risk and Assurance / General Counsel your focus is strengthening the legal function and providing a strategic approach to legal advice at Stats NZ.  You'll have a leadership role managing one other lawyer and contributing to the wider team work programme. You will be a trusted advisor across the business and build strong relationships with a range of stakeholders. We see you bringing legal and leadership expertise and also drive and passion to the role and team.  

This is a leadership role within the legal function, working closely with other areas of the Risk and Assurance function (Risk and Assurance, Governance, Internal Audit and Privacy). Come and join a friendly and professional team that strives to make a difference. 

This role would suit someone who can bring: 

  • Experience in legal leadership. 

  • At least 12 years PQE. 

  • Experience in a similar role that included a component of strengthening legal capability and developing work programmes to embed trusted legal advice across a large organisation. 

  • Wide technical knowledge, in particular experience in public, corporate and commercial law. 

  • Excellent relationship skills to build relationships and trust at all levels 

  • Demonstration of mātauranga Māori, fluency in te reo, understanding of tikanga or applying Te Tiriti o Waitangi in a work setting. 

  • Demonstrate a willingness to upskill and increase your cultural capability 

  • Understanding of the machinery of government and related processes and procedures.
