Science Director – Te Niwha

The New Zealand Government wishes to ensure that Aotearoa New Zealand has world-class research capability in place to respond to infectious disease threats into the future informed by the improvement opportunities identified throughout the COVID 19 pandemic response.

 As such, an Infectious Disease Research Platform was established. Now known as Te Niwha, the platform aims to:

•                          Build Aotearoa New Zealand’s infectious disease research capability for greater strength and scale.

•                          Ensure Aotearoa New Zealand is better prepared for known and emerging infectious disease threats, including future pandemics.

•                          Meet our obligations under Te Tiriti ō Waitangi and the aims of Pae Ora (healthy futures for Māori).

•                          Prioritise research to address health inequities.

•                          Link with international research.

Te Niwha is hosted in partnership by The Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR) and the Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka | University of Otago, engaging communities and researchers through a nation-wide network.

Te Niwha is led by Ngā Pou Kōwhao (Directorate) that comprises our Mana Whakahaere – Director and our Science Director, giving effect within each role to the balance of equity, partnership, protection and participation.

Te tūnga | The role

Working closely with the Mana Whakahaere – Director for Te Niwha, the Science Director is the science leader that ensures scientific integrity for research activities for Te Niwha.

This is an active senior leadership role in the Directorate that provides scientific advice and leadership within Te Niwha.

You will provide quality science advice to Te Niwha on matters requiring scientific depth and expertise, whilst meeting the science leadership needs of Te Niwha to ensure research impact is delivered as intended from concept development, through to research delivery and implementation. You will also work to embed Te Kawanata O Te Niwha, at the centre of our Platform culture.

You will be an infectious diseases expert, with an established collaborative research track record, extensive networks in the New Zealand health system, and an ability to work across institutions.

Note: This is a fixed term 0.4 FTE position until 31 August 2025. We are open to any location across New Zealand, including Tāmaki Makaurau, Pōneke or Otautahi.

Kia angitu koe | About you

To be successful in this role, you will have the following skills and expertise:

·        Demonstrable and significant track record of providing successful science leadership and delivery of large scale, high impact science programmes, preferably in infectious diseases.

·        Biomedical, clinical, Māori health or public health expertise in an infectious disease related field.

·        A post graduate research or clinical qualification in Biomedical, Clinical, Māori Health or public health in an infectious diseases related field.

·        Significant experience of leading and working with diverse collaborators, health professionals, including physicians and other stakeholders.

·        Outstanding research experience with supporting credentials and gravitas.
