He angitūtanga | About the role

Join DOC to lead the mahi in our National Programmes Unit and contribute to the protection of Kauri throughout the Northland region.

Kauri dieback disease, caused by the soil borne pathogen Phytophthora agathadicida (PA), is threatening Kauri with extinction. Protection of kauri is a national priority with a coordinated, cross agency, landscape scale kauri protection programme currently being rolled out. The purpose of the programme is to protect Aotearoa NZ's most iconic trees through, amongst other controls, sustained management of the vectors which can transport the pathogen, such as pigs and other animals.

DOC and Te Tiriti partners are part of a multi-agency response, led by MPI, which aims to prevent the spread of PA and protect kauri forests for future generations. DOC is responsible for protecting kauri on the land we manage which includes many of our most significant kauri forests in Aotearoa.

Note, this is not an operational hunting role; the majority of the role will be office-based with travel around the Kauri Lands region as required.

The position will be focussed on:

  • designing and operationalising a programme that will address landscape scale pig management in kauri lands with a view to achieve the goals of the National Pest Management Plan for kauri protection

  • delivering a pig management strategic framework for kauri lands using an adaptive management approach

  • building connections with relevant communities, individuals and agencies across kauri lands in conjunction with sharing knowledge on lessons learned from regions where management has been successful.
