NEMA's Pacific Disaster Risk Management programme is looking for Senior Advisor, Pacific DRM (Technical Input). This individual will provide emergency management capacity building support to Pacific Island countries; provide peer-to-peer support to Pacific Island countries through their National Disaster Management Offices (NDMOs); and work alongside the NDMOs by networking and providing technical advice where required. This role manages and provides technical emergency management input in accordance with their needs.

 Some of the key responsibilities are:

  • Effective relationships are developed with Partners (NDMOs in Partner countries) including monitoring/support visits where appropriate and requested

  • Partners are enabled to effectively respond to and recover from emergencies through ongoing peer-to-peer support and technical advice

  • Improvements are made to emergency management capability, operational arrangements and systems in Partner countries through identification of support utilising contacts / networks and internal National Emergency Management Agency expertise.

  • Input into six-monthly Programme progress reporting in support of the Project Manager

  • Support the maintenance and coordination of the Rapid Response Team capability

 Key attributes include:

  • Patience;

  • Political savvy and able to sense when and how to adjust to the stakeholder and their needs and perspectives;

  • Self-management and able to stay calm under pressure, with a high level of personal resilience;

  • Anticipates complex problems and risk, watches for tell-tale indicators that warrant intervention, and providing timely and considered advice on appropriate interventions; and

  • Previous work in the Pacific Islands and/or understanding of Pacific culture and context.

The salary band range for this position is 103,898 -$140,568 including Kiwisaver employer contributions.

Security Requirements

Due to the security requirements of this role, applicants must be a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident.  Preferred applicants will undergo Ministry of Justice background checks, psychometric testing and must provide recent referees.
