The role/Te mahi

In the role of Senior Solicitor, you will act as a trusted advisor giving legal advice to assess and mitigate legal risk and assist the University in achieving its strategic and tactical goals. You will work on a wide range of legal work and projects and will have the opportunity to extend and develop your legal knowledge and skills in both public and commercial law. You will also cultivate and maintain relationships with key stakeholders.

We are seeking an applicant who can start as soon as possible. The position is for parental leave cover and extends to mid-September.

Your skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako 

To be successful in this role you will be a qualified Barrister or Solicitor with a current practicing certificate and a sound understanding and knowledge of a range of areas of public and commercial law.

You will also ideally have:
•    Legal experience within a medium to large complex organisation.
•    An understanding of our obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, including how to apply its principles in a meaningful way in this role.
•    The ability to build relationships and influence.
•    Competency with te ao Māori, tikanga and te reo Māori or a willingness to learn.

Highly developed communication skills, excellent organisational skills and attention to detail are essential for this role. We are looking for applicants who are enthusiastic, thrive working in a team environment and have a positive approach to work and life.

Good knowledge of the University policies and procedures would be an advantage, but not essential. A working understanding of the Education and Training Act 2020, Official Information Act 1982, Privacy Act 2020, Local Government Official Information & Meetings Act 1987, and Public Records Act 2005 is important for this role.

This is a fixed term, full time (37.5 hours per week) position. Preference is for a candidate located in Dunedin, but remote working will be considered for an applicant with the right experience. 

You must have the right to live and work in New Zealand to apply for this position.

The salary range for this position is $133,845 to $161,762 per annum.
