Te tūnga | The role

We are seeking applications from experienced and qualified candidates to be a Vessel Adequacy Assessor's (VAA) for Maritime NZ, with a role located in Whangarei and Nelson. We are looking for individuals who can be available when required to undertake assessments of applications for International Voyage Certificates (Pleasure Craft) including a desk top review of crew, vessel and safety equipment adequacy assessments within these regions in line with the Maritime NZ process.

You will make informed decisions on International Voyage Certificate (Pleasure Craft) applications, sharing insights and observations with other Assessors and the wider Regulatory Operations team.

Nōu te rourou | What you bring 

  • Experience and understanding of oceanic voyage and what is involved

  • Experience and understanding of yachting rigs and equipment

  • Relevant oceanic voyage qualification for example Yacht-master Ocean

  • Experience in undertaking applied assessments

  • Established credibility in the Yachting sector

  • Proven experience with and knowledge of maritime regulations and legislation (as it applies to pleasure craft)

  • Ability to cope under pressure and manage applicant expectations in difficult circumstances

  • Current unrestricted driver's licence.

  • Ability to work in a culturally safe and respectful manner, always being mindful of the cultural diversity of the industry and having regard to Te Ao Māori and Treaty of Waitangi principles.
