Senior Technician - Forensic Chemistry (Auckland)

Te tūnga | The role

We have a full-time fixed term contract until October 2025 for a Senior Technician to join our Forensic Chemistry Laboratory. This role is based within our Forensic Business Group and is located at our Mount Albert Science Centre (MASC) in Auckland.

In this role, you will be involved in:

  • Providing technical assistance in the scientific examination of items for forensic purposes to the specified standard.

  • Preparing samples for analysis, carrying out that analysis (using FTIR, GC and GCMS) and reporting results with supporting documentation to the reporting scientist.

  • Tracking the examination and analyses through a laboratory information management system (LIMS).

  • Undertaking instrument maintenance and calibration (including FTIR, GC and GCMS).

  • Day to day technical, quality assurance and administrative tasks to support the outputs of our Forensic Chemistry Laboratories.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in science with a sound knowledge of wet / organic chemistry.

  • Additional postgraduate qualifications in Chemistry or Forensic Science would be highly advantageous.

  • Appropriate prior experience working in a forensic or commercial laboratory with knowledge of safe laboratory practices and biological and chemical hazards.

  • Experienced in the use of analytical instrumentation, including at least one of the following FTIR, GCMS, GC, and HPLC.

  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office and preferably STARlims and associated software.

  • A current full NZ Driver’s Licence.

  • Excellent time management and organisational skills.

  • Initiative, flexibility, and a willingness to support the wider team.
