Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a permanent, full-time Pūkenga - Lecturer in Māori Designed Environments. While the primary teaching duty associated with this role will be serving as a Pūkenga - Lecturer in Māori and Designed Environments specialisation, introduced into the Bachelor of Architectural Studies in 2022, the role will also encompass teaching into critical areas of Mātauranga Māori in key courses across other majors offered by the Te Kura Waihanga - School of Architecture and in Postgraduate research that engages with Mātauranga Māori.

Key responsibilities:

  • Fulfill the responsibilities of teaching and development in the Māori Designed Environments specialization.

  • Contribute to the establishment of the Mātauranga Māori Framework that is currently being developed in the School.

  • Supervision of Masters’ students whose research engages Mātauranga Māori.

Ō pūmanawa - About you

You will:

  • Be passionate about teaching a diverse range of students and appreciate the importance of Ako (reciprocal teaching and learning) to this environment.

  • Have familiarity with contemporary discourse and demands in the field of architecture and with Te Aranga Māori design principles.

  • Ideally have a specialisation and evidence of success in one or more of the following:

    • Urban design.

    • Regenerative architecture.

    • Landscape architecture.

  • Appreciate the fundamental and advanced requirements of Māori designed environments as part of the discipline of architecture will help you thrive in this role, industry connections and opportunities to collaborate and enhance student successes and experiences.

  • Engage with allied majors, in particular Building Science, Interior Architecture and Landscape Architecture, and be encouraged to share and scaffold knowledge across the other relevant majors in the School of Architecture.

  • Have a collaborative and open approach to teaching and learning which will give you opportunities of growth and diversity.

  • Encourage a collaborative and supportive environment.

Key requirements:  

  • Relevant qualifications or industry experience or a completed PhD in a relevant field.

  • An established track record in research publication and/or creative work.

  • Demonstrated evidence of a high standard of teaching in a relevant field at tertiary level or relevant industry experience.

  • Ability to work with students and staff from a diverse range of backgrounds.
